Seville continues to promote the development of startups to position itself as an international benchmark, for which the I Observatory of La Fábrica de Sevilla has been published with data collected during 2022 and which serves as an information and diagnostic tool to analyse the ecosystem of technology startups with global ambition in Seville.
La Fábrica de Sevilla is a public-private initiative whose aim is to boost and promote technology startups with global projection, with the support of the Seville City Council through the Municipal Business Corporation (CEMS), the Seville Chamber of Commerce and the Seville Futura innovation platform.
On the basis of the conclusions drawn in this report, specific measures will be established that will emerge from this unifying project that is the ‘startup house’ of the city and that will try to satisfy the shortcomings detected in the study in terms of technological entrepreneurship.
These measures are intended to mark a turning point in Seville’s business fabric, within the framework of the municipal strategy which includes a change in the economic model and the objective of attracting technological entrepreneurs and promoting the creation of global projects based on technology.
The analysis includes data on the perception of the Seville ecosystem by entrepreneurs, teachers and students, concluding that entrepreneurship training at secondary or university level is fundamental for all the groups surveyed.
80% of entrepreneurs say that the best way to acquire the skills that lead to entrepreneurial success is specific training in this area. In the same vein, 93.33% of this segment indicated that university or vocational training should be complemented by transversal training in technology.
The segments agree that the most important barriers to developing a business idea are the lack of role models, the lack of contacts to create a network of support and advice, the fear of failure, the lack of training in entrepreneurship and the lack of entrepreneurial culture in Seville. Depending on the segment involved, the weight of these factors takes on a different priority.
Among the results of the Observatory, it is worth noting that, despite positively valuing the talent of the city’s entrepreneurial fabric, they indicate that on many occasions this talent is forced to leave due to the lack of a unified and benchmark ecosystem in technological startups with global ambition.
Teachers also agree on the need for transversal technological training, with almost 95% believing that it should be included in all university and vocational training curricula.
Moreover, among students, 66.67% consider entrepreneurship as an option for accessing the labour market, with a large percentage focused on the technology and health sector. However, a majority say that they have not received training in the necessary technological subject matter (91.67%). Specifically, 58.33% would like to learn more about tools such as big data, artificial intelligence, the internet of things or blockchain in order to be able to apply them in the future in a startup.
The support of public administrations is considered fundamental by most of the people consulted to promote digital and technological entrepreneurship with a global vision in Seville.
Therefore, the conclusion of the 1st La Fábrica de Sevilla Observatory is that there is a need for a unified startup ecosystem that serves as a reference for all its members.
